... Sku's American Craft Whiskey Distillery List

In a comment from the Last Blog-stuff .... sku said...
interesting video from Rogue. They are now also making a whiskey as well.

I've got a list of all of the American whiskey distilleries posted on my blog, including all of the micros, which might interest you. There are currently about 25 micros marketing whiskey in the US, with another dozen or so that are making whiskey but don't have any out yet. Like Rogue, many of them make other spirits and a number of others started out as breweries and wineries that saw spirits as a logical extension of their business

  1. Hi Ralfy,

First, I'd like to say that I've been enjoying your content. Your videos are a great tool for learning about Scotch Whisky & you've been a fun & great help in quickly turn me into my employer's "Scotch Man" at a liquor store in upstate NY. =)

Second, I have a question: In this list of distilleries, there is "Finger Lakes Distilling" under New York. They produce the Glen Thunder Corn Whiskey, which we recently stocked on our shelves for the first time (along with regular & berry flavored vodkas & their Seneca Gin). But - it's CLEAR! Doesn't that mean it's just vodka? I'm new to the world of distilling but my understanding is that whiskey is to be aged in a cask so that flavor & color are imparted on the "new spirit" (i.e. vodka - Right?). Of course I know that Scotch Whisky is aged at least 3 years in cask, but what about this Corn Whiskey? Why is it clear?

  2. ... hello Joshua, ... Scotch Whisky MUST be matured for a minimum of three years in oak casks not exceeding 700 litres capacity, and this inevitably adds a small or considerable degree of colour depending on the cask.
American Corn Whiskey is not bound by this legal requirement, unlike Bourbon, it does not require oak maturation.
