Attending Auctions or just looking at the on-line Catalogues are an excellent way of seeing the "lay of the land" if you fancy yourself as a collector or novelty hunter. Having personal experience of such matters I can reliably inform you that drinking Whisky 50 or more years in the bottle is not a problem.

Whisky lovers from across the world will have their eyes on Glasgow next week as one of the world’s rarest half bottles goes under the hammer.

The 1927 bottle of Springbank is the star attraction in the McTear’s Winter Rare Whisky Sale on 3rd February and is expected to fetch between £4000 and £6000.

The rare dram, which was distilled by J. & A. Mitchell & Co. Ltd in 1900 and drawn in 1927, is one of 500 lots in the sale.

“You don’t find too many half bottles coming to auction but it is very rare indeed to find one of this quality,” says McTear’s whisky specialist Andrew Bell. “Springbank is an extremely collectable whisky and I am sure there will be a lot of interest in this outstanding example.”

A Brace of Island Distilleries Added to the Lineup

Tobermory Distillery on the Isle of Mull and Bunnahabhain Distillery on Islay have now been added to the list of exhibitors. Tobermory is the only distillery on Mull and Bunnahabhain is an unusual Islay malt in that it generally contains little or no peat.

Morrison Bowmore Confirmed For Festival

Morrison Bowmore has confirmed it will have a presence at the whisky festival. The company, which makes Auchentoshan, Bowmore and Glen Garioch single malts, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Suntory Limited and is one of the major names in Scotch whisky. It is a welcome addition to the growing list of exhibitors for the November 13 event.

Indian Whisky, Amrut, Attending Glasgow’s Whisky Festival

Amrut Single Malt whisky comes from Bangalore in India. In 2002 the whisky was bottled in miniature form and distributed in the UK’s curry houses. This tactic worked extremely well in Glasgow due to our love of Indian cuisine so we are very excited to be able to confirm that Amrut will be exhibiting at the event.

Tickets Available Soon

Tickets for the event will be available to buy very soon. You will be able to buy them online, over the phone and in person from The Arches box office. But don’t call them until the tickets have been released! We will announce here and through various channels as soon as they are ready.

A very limited number of tickets will also be available for two masterclasses running on the day. More details to follow in the coming weeks but we are very excited as we are lining up something a bit different.

Duncan Taylor & Co Join Our Festival

Duncan Taylor has its origins in Glasgow where the company was initially a merchant and broker of Scotch Whisky casks. Devotion to the principle of providing only the finest casks to be filled at Scotland’s leading distilleries has been a key feature of the company’s history and this tradition of building an outstanding portfolio of only the finest scotch whiskies is being maintained to this day by the current owners.

We are delighted that Duncan Taylor will join us at Glasgow’s Whisky Festival.

It’s Official!

Glasgow’s Whisky Festival will take place on the 13th of November 2010 at The Arches in Glasgow, a superb arts and entertainment venue situated beneath Central Station. We will shortly announce the sale of tickets for this event. It’s going to be a cracker!

Ralfy invites “ye wee punters” for a dram

While in Victoria for the Whisky Festival, Scottish whisky reviewer Ralfy Mitchell popped by our Distillery for a tour and taste. What did he think of our fresh Craigdarroch (soon to be*) Whisky?

If I was to relate this to a Scotch whisky, the nearest would be a slightly custard, creamy version of Bladnoch. It’s Lowland in style… It’s grain rich, it’s quite complex…. a very interesting whisky. Well worth looking out for.

Female distiller wins blind taste test

Maybe women really do have the best "noses" – especially when it comes to whisky.

At a blind tasting of 18 varieties from around the globe at this weekend's Victoria Whisky Festival, the winner was a bottle of Penderyn single malt from the Welsh Whisky Company. It was created by Gillian MacDonald, the only female distiller in Britain.

At the tasting, hosted by The Whisky Bible author Jim Murray, the runner-up was Amrut Fusion, a brand from Bangalore, India.

Festival organizer Iain Hooey was surprised the Scottish whiskies did not make the cut, although they won last year in a non-blind test. He noted this year's 40-odd testers included aficionados from as far away as Chicago and Toronto and members of the Malt Maniacs, "an elite club of upper echelon" experts.

In an interview last week, MacDonald suggested women often have better "noses" than men, which makes them excellent distillers. "I'm absolutely thrilled," she said. "It doesn't get much better than winning a blind tasting."
